Why yellow, red cards were introduced in soccer game





Soccer game or football existed before the introduction of both yellow and red cards. They both spawned to ensure proper communications on the field of play.

Yellow card and red card  are used in several sports and most commonly indicates a warning or a temporary suspension.

For yellow card, it is used in many different sporting codes. Its meaning differs among sports; however, it most commonly indicates a caution given to a player regarding his or her conduct.


Some facts about both yellow and red cards


* The idea of using language-neutral coloured cards to communicate a referee's intentions originated with British football referee Ken Aston.

* They were first used in the 1970 FIFA World cup held in Mexico.

* The colour- coding scheme stemmed from the same principles used in traffic lights. Yellow means 'stop, if safe to do so' while red means 'stop'

* They were used to transcend language barrier on the field of play

* The referee must raise the card above his or her head
